Established in London in 1903, Dean’s Rag Book Company was first know for producing lithographed children’s books made out of cloth. The books were designed, not so much for educational purposes, but simplyfor fun.
One of my favorite examples is Dean’s Big Animal Rag Book, a cloth picture book featuring nine different farm and forest animals, which has been in my collection for some 20 years.
I’m especially fond of Bruce the Collie, Swift the Stag, Neddy the Donkey and Nutkins the Squirrel. When fully extended, the largest panels are 17” by 11”, the smaller panels 9“ x 11” The Big Animal Rag Book is in very good condition with light foxing on some of the pages but no holes or tears. The book was produced in 1914.
