SOLD Superb 19thc. Pennsylvania Penny Rug

Superb 19thc. Pennsylvania Penny Rug
Using a sophisticated palate and striking hexagonal form, the unknown maker of this late 19th century Pennsylvania penny rug has created a piece with timeless appeal. The rug is constructed with more than 300 “pennies” made from rich shades of wool, linen and other sturdy fabrics. Each penny consists of three appliquéd layers ranging in size from ¾” on to 1-3/4”. The overall pattern — ten concentric rows, each row a different color — reminds me of the quilting pattern “trip around the world” and makes me think the maker of the rug may also have been a quilter. Finished with a scalloped border, the rug has been professionally mounted. Finished size is 41” X 35-1/2”. Late 1800s. Excellent condition.
