Stylish Rag Doll in City Finery c. 1920
With her fancy silk dress, bow-trimmed cloche, handbag and pearl ear-bobs, this 16” cloth doll is clearly dressed for a special occasion — and also is clearly the work of a skilled and meticulous seamstress.
She’s made of heavy linen that has darkened with age and is stuffed with rags and wood shavings. Her clothing shows wear in keeping with the doll’s age. But the details are simply scrumptious from the bow-trimmed garters to the neat yarn coif.
The doll’s origin is a bit of a mystery. It’s possible that she was made from one of the many magazine patterns so popular at the time. But the hand-embroidered features, the handwork on her silk clothing and overall level of sophisticate (including pre-Barbie formed breast) suggest that she’s a one-of-a-kind creation. Very good condition; American; 1920s.
