SOLD Stickley & Brandt “North Wind” Armchair

Stickley & Brandt “North Wind” Armchair
Charles Stickley (one of the five Stickley brothers) and his cousin Schuyler Brand co-founded the Stickley & Brandt Chair Company in 1891. Throughout the 1890s, the company was the largest furniture dealer in New York. They were known for their highly ornate rockers and chairs. This “North Wind” armchair is a Stickley & Brandt creation. Made of quarter-sawn oak, the multi-purpose chair is as much architecture as it is furniture. Note the wide curved seat; carved stretcher; splayed, rolled arms; pierced splat; and arched top rail elaborately carved with a fierce North Wind.

As the photos show, this is a handsome, sturdy piece, in excellent condition, with miner shrinkage along one plank of the seat. A former owner has attached contemporary metal glides to the chair feet, but these can easily be removed. Dimensions are: 39-1/2” T from the floor to the center of the top rail; 24-1/2” W from arm to arm; 15-7/8” D seat. Stickley & Brandt closed their doors in 1918. This piece probably dates from the late 1890s to 1910.
