Signed Pastel by Thornton Dial, Sr. (b. 1928)
This untitled painting by self-taught Alabama-born artist Thornton Dial, Sr., which depicts an expressive black figure surrounded by flames of pure color, might well be called “soul on fire” (in a figural, rather than literal sense). This pastel-on-paper work is a striking example of the artist’s mastery of color and form. Overall dimensions are 22-1/2” x 19”, while the piece itself is 12-1/2” x 9-1/4”. Excellent condition. Signed TD in the lower right. Early 1990s.
