SOLD Pre-WPA New Mexico Child’s Chair

Pre-WPA New Mexico Child’s Chair

Made from old-growth Ponderosa pine, this handcrafted child’s chair is a good example of pre-WPA New Mexico furniture making.  The chair is made largely from 2X2 lumber and features mortised construction throughout. Evenly spaced nail holes along the front of the seat suggest that it was covered at one time, probably with hide or leather. I love the overall form the chair, and one of my favorite details is the carved stair stepping at the top of the stiles. A hard-to-find piece in very sturdy condition. Measurements are 24” H X 10-3/8” wide at the back and 11-1/2” W across the front of the seat. Early 1920s.
