God bless do-it-yourselfers! This funky shadow box is truly a clever make-do effort. The box itself is constructed from found or reclaimed lumber, painted white, fitted with a piece of glass and topped with what was probably an existing tramp art picture frame.
But here’s the funky part: The frame is attached to the box with screen door latches (as the photos show) to hold both the frame and the glass in place. And it works! There’s a length of wire across the back so the shadow box can hang on a wall or be used as a tabletop display case.
For all the folky-ness of this piece, the curvature of the inner edge of the frame adds a graceful touch. Dimensions are 16-1/2” t X 15-1/2” w X 5” d. Maker and origin unknown. C. 1930s – 1950s.
