Antique Pennsylvania Cloth Elephant
Like many of the soft elephant toys in this Gallery, “Mr. Wonderful” comes from a private collection, and is one of my favorites. Measuring 15” long and 10” high, this old fellow was originally collected in Pennsylvania and appears to be an Amish or possible Mennonite toy. Machine and hand sewn of wool flannel material that’s lost most of its nap, the elephant has tusks made of muslin and is soft stuffed with raw cotton. I love the early boot wooden button eyes and snippet of a tail. Despite a few areas of wear, this charming elephant toy is in lovely condition and ready to join a new herd. c.1900-1915.
