Large Amish Cloth Donkey

Large Amish Cloth Donkey

I’m sure there are some of you out there who will insist this early Amish cloth toy is a horse (and you’re welcome to weigh in). But I’m convinced that what we have here is a donkey. Just look at those ears! He’s made from heavy blanket or coat fabric that I can only describe as army green, and he’s stuffed with cotton batting. His mane and tail appear to be made of bits of real horsehair. And while he’s lost an inch or so of his right rear leg, with a little assistance, he’s still able to stand. And, oh, what a face!- black button eyes and embroidered red nostrils and mouth topped by a shock of straw-colored mane and big floppy green ears. 18-1/2” L X 9-1/2” H. First quarter 20th centurie.
