Inlaid Box with Patriotic & Masonic Motifs

Inlaid Box with Patriotic & Masonic Motifs
I love folky hand-made boxes and none more so than this one. It’s made of multiple woods and decorated with flags, Masonic motifs and herringbone marquetry, with a narrow band of etched leaves and swirls around the hinged top (clearly, someone loved his woodworking kit.) The footed box has a felt-lined lift-out tray and is made from old packing crates. With walls that are 1″ thick, it’s very heavy — and very sturdy. The lid is 1-3/4″ deep and is inset on the underside with a thick piece of beveled mirror (one of my favorite features) framed by a gilded paint border. To top it off, the box retains its original handle and working lock and key. 10-3/4″L X 8″H X 8-3/4″D. Early 20th c.
