Folky Vintage Carnival Noisemaker

Folky Vintage Carnival Noisemaker

Made of wood and wire with a bamboo slide, and decorated with five painted carved wood “musicians” in native costumes, this vintage percussive noisemaker is as much folk art as musical instrument. For example, the figures wear garments fashioned of felt and trimmed with traces of ribbon and colored paper. Their hair is yarn, and their hats are wood, straw, and paper-trimmed yarn. The overall condition is very good, with some fabric loss as the photos show. Two of the figures are missing their castanets, but all four sets of tin symbols are still in place. When fully extended, the bamboo slide is 30” tall. The piece is constructed with European nails, and I would say the origin is probably Spain or Portugal or possibly Brazil. First quarter 20th c.
