Early Texas Spool Quilt with Provenance

Texas antiques dealer/collector Harold Hollis spent some 30 years building an impressive collection of Texas furniture, pottery, folk art, firearms, textiles and more. This is one of the quilts from Mr. Hollis’s collection — a twin size spool quilt from the Felix Harris in Breckenridge, Texas … dating from 1900 to 1920 … 82” x 65” … never laundered … and in very good condition.

Hand pieced and quilted from a medley of 19th and early 20th century cotton prints, the quilt is batted with raw cotton, has a blue and white print border at the head and foot, and is backed by what appears to be homespun muslin. There is a break in the fabric on the backside of the quilt, as the photos show, and minor wear on the front to a few of the early brown prints.  I love the exuberant palette of this quilt, especially the play of marigold and various blues.

The size, condition and look of this quilt make it ideal for use in a guest bedroom, as a colorful throw over the back of a sofa, or as a piece of fabric art on a tall expanse of wall.
