Collected in New England, this early, well-loved doll stands 13” tall and is all hand sewn and stuffed with raw cotton. Her dress, which is made from a blue and natural check flax homespun, is also completely hand sewn. Note the use of metal hooks and thread “eyes” on the back of the dress. One of my favorite touches is the gold ric rac trim at the wrists — a touch that was no doubt added several decades later. As the photos show, there is loss to the feet and to the right hand, and the legs have been re-attached over time. But the best part of a doll like this is imagining who made it, who played with it and who took care of it all these many years.
