Child’s Tramp Art Cupboard
Constructed from an early shipping crate, this painted chip carved stepback cupboard has two drawers and two lower doors, both hinged with burlap — an unusual touch. Note the zig-zag carving that frames the upper shelf area. The African word for this is “woot,” meaning “spirit.” This feature, and the painted diamond-shaped motifs on each side of the cupboard, suggest that this piece may well be African-American made. On the back side of the cupboard is the original Railway Express bill of lading stamped PAID.
