A Trio of Small Antique Purses

Stocking stuffers anyone? These early antique purses might do very nicely. Included in the grouping is a beautiful Moroccan leather clutch, a small alligator coin purse, and a petite leather handbag with a woven cloth strap dated of 1878.

Small though it is at 4-1/4” W x 2-1/2 H, the 19th c. handbag is beautifully designed. It has two different silvery clasps and red felted pockets on each side, plus a center pocket lined with soft butter-colored leather. Lift up the center metal clasp and you’ll find the following inscription: Pat. Feb. 12 76 Reissued Sept.10 78.  The purse is in overall very good condition, given its advanced age, with only modest signs of wear.

The small alligator coin purse (4-3/4 x 3-1/2) is leather lined and has a small chain strap and snap clasp. It, too, is in very good condition and dates from the first quarter of the 20th century.

Third in the collection is an elegant little Moroccan leather clutch with decorative brass trim, including a clasp embossed with the United States Capital — suggesting that it’s a Washington, D.C. memento from the early 20th century. The three-pocket interior is lined with soft buff leather. Just 7” L x 2” W. Very stylish, indeed!
