19thc Folk Art Cane with Nine Carved Heads, Signed

19thc Folk Art Cane with Nine Carved Heads, Signed
Using the knobby contours of the shaft as noses, chins, beards, tongues and other features, the maker of this piece has decorated the cane with seven carved male heads, beginning with a grinning, long-nosed character that serves as the cane’s handle. Not only are the heads cleverly conceived, they are skillfully rendered, with polychrome touches that help animate their expressions. Presumably American, the 36” tall cane retains the original metal tip and is in excellent condition. Polychrome, stain and wood. Initials JNS (?). Third quarter 1800s.

$1,500 (custom stand included)

Note from Jean:
This is one of five folk at canes that I’m adding to the Gallery in the next few days.
