The unknown maker of this early and large (91-1/2” X 86”) pieced quilt definitely had an artist’s eye. Through her skillful placement of various early cotton prints, checks, stripes and solids — predominantly red, blues and creams — she’s created a piece with a distinctive patriotic feel.
Hand pieced and quilted, it’s made with alight weight cotton batting and dates from the last quarter of the 19th century. As the photos show, it’s in overall good to very good condition with wear and breakage to parts of the binding and some loss to the more vulnerable brown fabrics, as the photos show. There are also a few small stains and splits in the floral cotton backing.
But taken as a whole, it’s a sturdy and striking piece that could dress a bed or decorate a wall. From a private collection where it’s been in storage for years.
