Collected in Ronks, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, this happy little doll quilt is a first attempt at quilting and presumably the work of a child. It’s Amish-made, c.1940s, and features a 16-patch design of tiny hand-pieced floral cotton squares and larger square-ish cotton pieces of ruddy orange.
The piecework is framed by soft cotton flannel bound in orange, and all the quilting was done by machine. The combination of aquamarine and orange and the erratic exuberance of the quilting make this one of my favorites, and it’s been in my collection for ten years.
Measuring 11” x 10-1/2”, the quilt is in good to fair condition, with some unraveling along the binding and wear to the backside as the photos show. But it’s perfect for a shadow-box frame!
