“Santo Gato” by Richard “Jumbo” Davila
New Mexico self-taught carver Richard “Jumbo” Davila (b. 1955) made this whimsical piece on consignment for a Houston, Texas, collector, and I’m told it’s one of a kind. “Saint Cat” is made of painted carved wood and stands 15 inches tall from the top of his ears to the base. His carved tail and wooden teeth, along with his fishing pole and catch of three painted fish add to the carving’s folky charm. Signed and dated on the underside of the base “Davila ’83.”
