Antique Carved Oak Ball

Antique Carved Oak Ball
Even at first glance, this heavy wooden sphere is an object of curiosity. What was it made for? How was it used? This solid oak ball was clearly carved with a circular saw and, while it appears to be perfectly round, a closer inspection reveals a small “dimple,” suggesting the ball was made as a finial that sat on a newel post or baluster. The ball is now a curious and commanding presence on an equally curious “made-do” stand, reminding us of the adage “form over function.” American, 19thc.
