1940s Fundraising Toy Elephant

1940s Fundraising Toy Elephant
In 1917, the American Junior Red Cross was officially organized. On behalf of Red Cross programs and beneficiaries, American young people set about collection and making various items for sale. The group was particular active during World War 11, and this hand crafted gabardine elephant with its Junior Red Cross tag still intact probably dates from that period the early 1950s. Firmly stuffed with embroidered eyes, the toy is in wonderful condition, as the photos show, with a few areas of staining but no rips or holes.
